Intercultural communication
As we live in a globalized world where we frequently interact with people from different cultural backgrounds. Hence, intercultural communication is inevitable. Communicating with people from the different cultural background is necessary for business, in the classroom and the community. Globalization has made the world to become smaller, as people from all corners of the world come together due to some common interest.  Intercultural communication is important in every career that is why the art of communicating with people from different cultures is one of the important skills in life. Intercultural communication skills enable us not only to communicate effectively but also to share information with other people from other cultures.
Even though language skills is an important part of intercultural communication, there are other requirements to develop appropriate intercultural communication skills these includes understanding the customs, standard and their thought patterns. Developing good intercultural communication skills means accepting the cultural difference and adapting to them. Among all the sectors, education relies on the effective interaction between teachers and the learners; therefore intercultural communication skills are important because schools have become more diverse than before.
Successful communication between teachers and students is a prerequisite of effective transfer of knowledge using appropriate communication skills. Having a rich knowledge of both verbal and nonverbal skills and effectively reacting sensitively to other people from different cultures is necessary within the learning environment. Similarly, within the business sector, intercultural communication skills are a requirement due to globalization. Intercultural communication is important, especially with the emergence of multi-national companies.  Doing business without understanding other people, culture can be difficult.
To effectively understand and communicate within a cross-cultural arena, one needs to understand the values, attitudes, beliefs, and behavior of other people. Accordingly, intercultural communication has become an essential component in the medical field. For example, a health care provider needs to understand and be sensitive to ethnic minority patient. Language difficulties combined with their beliefs and understanding of the disease can result in the wrong diagnosis. Within the health sector, communication with non-English speakers is one of the major challenges facing health care providers. That is why health care workers are being trained to use alternative ways to enhance communication with their patients using professional interpreters.
In today’s marketplaces, one can only strive by communicating effectively; the modern workplace is more global. Companies do not just look at technical skills, but also intercultural skills. The ability to speak different languages, demonstrate respect among other employees, and cope with cultural differences is the main focus for most employers. Managing people from different cultures within an organization is one of the challenges facing many corporate. However, they can function effectively without understanding their business environment, hence many companies have adopted programs that promote cultural diversity at workplaces advocating for intercultural skills.
Intercultural skills are important for several reasons, they give employees a better understanding of their work environment and also help others adapt to a new work environment limiting cultural shock while enhancing cultural awareness. Managers need to promote intercultural communication skills to encourage employees to feel part of the organization hence increase their productivity.
Understanding culture is not just about their behavior and language; it is about understanding how to successfully interact with people from other culture in the most appropriate way treating them with respect and dignity. Therefore, intercultural communication is more than just a simple process. It starts with self-awareness that entails accepting the cultural the differences and adapting to them to show solidarity. As the world is becoming smaller, it means that people are frequently interacting and widely therefore intercultural communication offer the ability to deal with people across cultures.
